Atelier’s husband and wife team, Ondine Chattan and David Reed, left the Silicon Valley six years ago to relocate to the wine country town of Healdsburg in rural Sonoma County. She, already a winemaker by profession, and he, a project manager, dreamed of marrying their individual talents to create a small, family winery where they would produce boutique wines that were reflective of their passion for great wine and their love of the worldwide wine country lifestyle. After diving into this pursuit by producing a barrel or two of Zinfandel and Syrah in their garage they rented space from a friend at another boutique winery and started their commercial wine venture in 2002.
For those unfamiliar with their name, an atelier is a workshop or more specifically an artisan’s studio. For them the word conjures up a perfect image of who they are and what they have set out to do. Ondine and David's winemaking began in theirr garage, which was their studio. As anyone who has ever dabbled in winemaking well knows, winemaking is as much an art as it is a science. In their garage workshop they took a creative approach to traditional winemaking to produce wines of elegance, balance, and distinction. Atelier is Ondine and David's atelier.
Why a key for their logo? In keeping with the theme of the artists’ studio they selected an antique skeleton key from a family collection as the emblem of the winery. The key has multiple meanings and much significance to them both, but first and foremost Ondine and David are positioning Atelier as a key to unlocking the character of each of the various wine appellations and varietals they work with. |
