Feudo Montoni

During the Aragonese domination, the estate belonged to various noble families: among whom the Doria, the Abatellis, who built the “baglio” in 1469, then Baron Notabartolo in 1550. As early as 1595 in “De Naturali Vinorum Historia” the Papal agronomist Andrea Bacci highly praised the wine from the noble vineyard of Feudo Montoni as “… a very strong red wine, of pleasant nose and flavour and suitable for long conservation…”
In the XVIII century the estate was bought by the Beneventano and a hundred years later, Baroness Eulalia Beneventano married Baron Francica-Nava. It was from the Baron’s nephew, Giuseppe, Cardinal of Catania, at the beginning of the last century, that my grandfather Don Rosario bought “Feudo Montoni”. The vineyard was already home to various types of Sicilian vine, one of which was my grandfather’s beloved Nero d’Avola; his passion was passed on to my father Elio.

Today after 600 years, and now in the third generation, I am aware of my great, enological heritage and my sole objective is to produce wines that create “emotions”.

“Feudo Montoni” Nero d’Avola has been grown on our land for over six hundred years and made into wine for three generations, long before it was talked about or became fashionable. Today, even more so than before, our pure Nero d’Avola retains the strong identity of the ancient Sicilian vine, without being influenced by the trends of taste, which would probably make it more attractive but with less personality and character. For centuries we have worked in dignified silence, between the vines and the cellar, patiently waiting to produce “the great invention of our tradition.”
