The Alto 3 vineyard from Bodega Alto, at 4947 ft, is one of the highest altitude vineyard producing quality grapes in the world. The vineyard is located in Catamarca, 515 miles north from Mendoza, within the Andes Mountain range. High altitude, dry rocky soils with very scarce rain (below 40 mm/year) and large temperature contrasts between day and night combine to produce low yields of high quality grapes. The altitude and weather facilitate organic practices and the vines do not receive any chemical treatments. The grapes are carefully selected and handpicked into small cases of 30 pounds. Fermentation takes place in small concrete tanks. Only native yeasts are used. After 21 day maceration, the wine is aged for 6 months in American and French oak casks, and finally bottled unfined and unfiltered. Carlos Arizu is the winemaker.
