Winemaker Kyle Johnson and his wife Amy founded Purple Star Winery in 2007. Kyle has almost 20 years of experience in the wine industry. After graduating Washington State University he took a position in Viticulture for Chateau Ste. Michelle. After two years, he then took a position at the CSM research winery where they would vinify vineyard research trials to carry them through to finished wine for evaluation. Unfortunately, his position was closed by our parent company after only 9 months (since they didn’t make them any money!). He was absorbed by the CSM red wine production facility which gave a tremendous amount of experience in a very short time (5 years). From there Kyle moved to a small winery in Prosser Washington called Olsen Estates, where he was the head winemaker for the life of this brand. Which, sadly ended after only four vintages. At this point his wife, Amy and Kyle decided to take a leap ourselves in to the wine industry. With a lot of help from their families, they have just completed the 8th harvest on their own. Today, Kyle & Amy work at a 13,000 sq ft production facility located about a mile west of Red Mountain, in Benton City. Kyle is a fan of whole berry, cool fermentations, hand punch downs, French oak and minimal if any filtration. He believe that this helps retain the most character from their vineyards.
Seattle Children’s Hospital is very dear to them. Kyle’s grandmother was a patient there when she was very young. Kyle himself have been treated there as well as a couple nieces and nephews. Amy and Kyle realize they have a pretty good life compared to most of the world and simply want to help others as well as instill these values in their three children.
