Sea Mist Vineyards is collaboration between Phil Laramore a long time Sommelier from Colorado and Craig Handly, the consulting winemaker. Phil and Craig have always loved the cool climate expression of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley but the prices of grapes have always been too high to fit in their drive for bringing great wines at great prices to the market. Craig is a long time resident of Napa Valley but has some strong connections over in the Russian River Valley. For the Chardonnay, they are using fruit from two vineyards; Vine Hill (Kistler buys fruit from here) and Owsley Ranch. Vine Hill is a nice combination of clay loam and sandy subsoil with a gentle slope to add to the ripening complexity making it a prime spot for growing Chardonnay. Owsley Ranch is one of the furthest west vineyards in RR Valley and sits at the Bloomfield Gap where fog reaches it first each day. These vineyards add to the overall lemon zest flavors that Sea Mist is known for. The Pinot Noir is sourced from two ÒunnamedÓ vineyards one just north of Graton and the other about three miles west of Santa Rosa. The cool, foggy Russian River Valley is arguably the best climate in California that allows for slow and even ripening imparting super concentrated flavors. All fruit is brought to the Ranch Custom Crush Facility (Joel Gott) immediately after the harvest.
